Decarbonizing the Energy System of Non-Interconnected Islands: The Case of Mayotte

Islands face unique challenges on their journey towards achieving carbon neutrality by the mid-century, due to lack of energy interconnections, limited domestic resources, extensive fossil fuel dependence, and high load variance requiring new technologies balance demand supply. At same time, these can be turned into a great opportunity for economic growth creation jobs with non-interconnected islands having potential become transition frontrunners adopting sustainable implementing innovative solutions. This paper uses an advanced energy–economy system modeling tool (IntE3-ISL) accompanied plausible decarbonization scenarios assess medium- long-term impacts system, emissions, economy, society island Mayotte. The model-based analysis adequately captures specificities Mayotte examines complexity, challenges, opportunities decarbonize island’s system. necessitates adoption ambitious climate policy measures deployment low- zero-carbon both in supply sides accounting characteristics each individual sector, while sectoral integration is also important. To reduce emissions from hard-to-abate sectors, such as transportation industry, include installation use highly efficient equipment, electrification end (such widespread electric vehicles), large roll-out renewable sources, well production green hydrogen synthetic fuels.
